DESIGN SAMPLES

Right now, I only have one: a two-page spread I created in InDesign CS5.5 to showcase a nonfiction essay I wrote. It’s titled “Diamonds Are Forever?: An objective reflection on a reflective object,” and you can view it in .PDF format here.

WRITING CLIPS

I’ve written for a number of newspapers, web sites, and magazines. My favorite clips are the following five:

12/19/2011, 2D-X.com; “Tune into Rainwave, democratic game radio”

It’s hard to imagine The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past without the familiar overworld music, or Super Mario Bros. without its iconic theme song. You may even have set your ringtone to a tune from your favorite game. What can we say? There’s just something about video game music that plucks at the heartstrings.

Fall 2007, Charm City DIY (my former blog); “If talented was an instrument, he’d be hitting all the right notes: Spotlight on Matt Hogans”

The tall, lanky 21 year old stands in the middle of his bedroom, which is a mess. In one corner is his computer, hooked up to futuristic-looking electronic music mixing devices. In another corner is an oversized amplifier and a pile of guitars. All over the floor are assorted papers and CDs.

Matt Hogans is standing in the middle of the chaos, holding a beautiful, wooden electric guitar.

“I just finished it,” he says with a tinge of pride. “Took me six months, because I kept putting it off, but it’s done.”

7/28/2004, Maryland Times Press; “OP 8-year-old golf champion to play in world tourney” (in .DOC format)

The winner of a Maryland state golf championship has been playing golf for half her life, has her own caddy, enjoys competing and is at the moment being chided by her father for eating so many Pringles.

“You’ve had enough,” gently remarks Ron Clark.

Ocean Pines resident Nikki Clark is the winner of the U.S. Kids Golf Maryland State Championship in the category Girls 8 and Under. Because the 8 year old won first place in the tournament last month, shooting 49 on a nine-hole green, she was invited to the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship in Williamsburg, Va. this week.

7/16/2004, Maryland Beachcomber; “Bike man’s wheels keep spinning” (in .DOC format)

A confused-looking man wanders into Jack Colcord’s 16th Street bike rental store on the Boardwalk, looking for the entrance to the Ocean View American Grill. Jack directs the man toward the building next door, then quips, “How about some sausage with your bike?”

“I’d like to substitute bacon for the sausage,” returns a customer in line for a bike.

Jack laughs, then comes right back with another one-liner: “The toast is pre-buttered. I hope that’s OK.”

7/9/2003, Damascus Gazette; “Letterboxing a hobby of inky fingers and hidden treasures”

Amateur letterboxer Claire Stevens picks her way through a muddy trail, nose buried in a computer printout.

“You’ll see a large oak tree growing over some ‘lit-chen’ covered rocks,” the Germantown resident reads with the determination of a 10-year-old.

“Lichen,” her mother Donna Stevens patiently corrects her. Claire turns her attention to a nearby oak tree and declares that this must be the tree.

Below are individual clips from other websites and publications, from most recent to oldest.

10/15/2007, The Towerlight; “Soundbites”

Fall 2007, The Towerlight; “Corner Stable: Baltimore’s Best Ribs” (in .DOC format)

March 2007, What’s Up? Annapolis; “Stars on Ice: Skating into Baltimore” (in .DOC format)

8/27/2003, Rockville Gazette; “Pastor wins national fencing title”

8/20/2003, Damascus Gazette; “Clarksburg woman aids families of the missing”

8/13/2003, Rockville Gazette; “Giving the gift of life to a stranger”

7/30/2003, Rockville Gazette; “Playwriting is ‘in the bag’ for Derwood teen”

7/9/2003, Poolesville Gazette; “Vacation, apathy lead to drop in blood banks’ supplies”

7/2/2003, Germantown Gazette; “First Tee aims to level the field for young, underprivileged golfers”

6/18/2003, Germantown Gazette; “Team Starbucks serves up whole ‘latte’ aid for AIDS”

Currently, I write for Raspwire.

More of my writing is showcased on my former blog, Charm City DIY: the subversion of craft.
